Duramax Lullabies

[Intro]
Soft banjo, low diesel idle
Mmm-hmm, mmm-hmm
Granddad’s truck is hummin’ low

[Verse 1]
Baby’s bundled in a blanket
By the passenger-side door
Granddad says, “We’ll take it easy,
Just a little mile or four”

Mama’s got the diaper bag
Dad’s got worry in his eyes
But that old ’05 Chevy
Sings Duramax lullabies

[Chorus]
Duramax lullabies
On a gravel road tonight
Little hands and dashboard lights
Stars above the pines

First ride in granddad’s Chevy
Where the river bends and sighs
Rock-a-bye, little one
To Duramax lullabies

[Verse 2]
There’s coffee stains and feed-store dust
And a socket in the tray
A faded hat, a paper map
From another working day

That truck has hauled half the township
Stone and tools and alibis
Now it carries one small heartbeat
Through Duramax lullabies

[Chorus]
Duramax lullabies
On a gravel road tonight
Little hands and dashboard lights
Stars above the pines

First ride in granddad’s Chevy
Where the river bends and sighs
Rock-a-bye, little one
To Duramax lullabies

[Bridge]
Not every cradle’s painted white
Not every hymn has words
Some are sung by engine blocks
And tires kicking dirt

Some prayers smell like diesel
Some blessings come with keys
Some love is just a granddad
Driving forty-five with ease

[Verse 3]
Someday you’ll be older
And that truck might not be there
But you’ll hear that gentle rumble
In the cool September air

And you’ll know you were protected
By two worn-out loving eyes
And the first song you remember
Was Duramax lullabies

[Final Chorus]
Duramax lullabies
On a gravel road tonight
Little hands and dashboard lights
Stars above the pines

First ride in granddad’s Chevy
Where the Wasi River sighs
Rock-a-bye, little one
To Duramax lullabies

[Outro]
Mmm-hmm, mmm-hmm
Granddad’s truck is hummin’ low
Rock-a-bye, little one
Down Lake Nosbonsing Road
